CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Darkness lingered in every corner of the room, but the shadows no longer offered comfort. Sayah lay on the bed, curled beneath the opulent satin bedspread with her head pillowed on her arms. Sobs shook her shoulders as Dal’gon’s threats weighed on her mind. A soft noise drew her attention and she raised her head.

“Shush,” Kage said quietly as he sat on the bed beside her. He pulled her into his arms and wiped the tears from her eyes. “Don’t cry, love.”

Sayah rested her cheek against his chest, wrapping her arms around his back. “Did you know?” she asked.

“Know what?”

“That your father killed my parents because he wanted me.” She tilted her head back to look at him. “Did you know?”

“No. He never said…he just planted the seed about angelic blood being an explanation for your abilities and left it there.”

“He wants me to…to…” She stopped, unable to finish her sentence.

“To what?”

“He wants me to breed him another heir. A child who would be capable of toppling dynasties and creating mayhem.”

Kage’s eyes flashed. “He wants you to bear him a child,” he said, anger simmering in his words. “He wants to use you—”

“Maddox killed my parents so that I wouldn’t be protected. So that I would be alone,” she said, ending on a sob. “Don’t you see what that means?”

“Tell me.” Kage stroked his hand up and down her arm as he held her.

“He always knew I was out there. When you came to him, he knew exactly who I was. And he wanted you to find me. He wanted you to bring me here to him so that he could finally get what he wants most of all.” She slumped back into the bed, her shoulders shaking from her desperate effort to hold back her tears. “Me.”

Kage curled up behind her, wrapping his arms around her. “I had no idea. I’m so sorry, Sayah. I led him to you.” His face fell and he buried it in her shoulder, inhaling the soft scent that clung to her skin. “I have to go,” he said. “I snuck up here after I saw Father, but I’m expected to be seated at dinner when he brings you down. My punishment for disobeying him is to be forced to watch you with him.”

“Please,” Sayah begged. “Please don’t let him touch me.”

“If I can find a way to get us out of here, I will,” Kage said. “But he barricaded the door we snuck out of last time, and he took my ability to walk in the shadow realm, so we can’t escape that way.”

“Kage, I—” She rolled over, facing him.

“Don’t,” he said, gently pressing his lips to her cheek. “You don’t need to say anything. I know.”

“I need to say it,” Sayah said. “I need to tell you. I…I love you, Kage.”

A smile teased up the corners of his lips, and he cupped her chin gently, tilting her head back to kiss her softly on the lips. “I know,” he said. “I love you, too.
